very helpful tutorial, thank you!
One of the nice things about UA-cam being more or less a video library, where a video can live for years on end, until it's needed. This video is a classic case. Moreover, this video taught me more in a few minutes than I have learned, collectively, in years about synths, the relationships between settings, and sound design in general. I think that's because it wasn't designed as a tutorial or training video, just a demonstration and explanation at an introductory level. I know I missed a lot, too, that I'm not yet ready to understand, so I will be returning to this video as a reference as I move forward in my learning. Thanks J Riley Hill!
Oh so glad it was helpful! thanks for the comment :)
Your beginner Bitwig videos have taught me more than the official training offerings. Thanks for teaching from a user's perspective.
Awesome glad it was useful!
J Riley Hill I cannot figure out (there's only so much time in a one hour lesson) to scrub through the music. I don't mean a proper scrubbing tool as in Ableton. Say you're in Arranger and you've listened to 4 seconds of an arrangement. I want to get to 14 seconds instantly. I can't do it while the audio is playing. When it's stopped yes. There must be a way? The playback numbers beats, bars seconds don't respond except when music ISN'T playing. Thanks!
you can jump to a spot while audio is playing by "double clicking" on the space at the top of the arranger where the bar numbers are listed.
if you want to display the minutes seconds in that bar you can right click and go "show realtime ruler"
Thank you!!
Excellent video! Very helpful for me, a beginner. Thank you.
awesome! glad it was helfpul
Yup; and it’s weird AF😂
Bros watching TikTok live
Thank you so much for this video! I've been running into this issue for some time now and it still is hard to find documentation on fixing this noteoff behavior. You saved me so much head-scratching!
No problem! That was my experience also, sometimes those sort of things you'd think would be simple are the biggest snags in pure data
OMG. You've cracked the code on how they made the minion voices in Despicable Me!!
I did? Ok great haha
Cool clip launcher ideas - Thanks!
You’re welcome! Glad you enjoyed
If you freeze it in ableton it also frees up RAM and CPU totally
yeah it's true. I don't like the way freezing works as much personally. You need to leave the frozen track with the big blue line on it in your project if you want to be able to go back quickly. In Bitwig you can disable a track and have disabled tracks hide, so it's still in your project but taking no cpu and no visual space... I just find that more elegant.
The workflow of bouncing in bitwig is a bit more complicated and tweaky than freeze in ableton. I don't know if overall it's better for most users but it's something I personally prefer.
Just subscribed. Do what the pros do > "Promosm" .
This makes me dream of audio engineer asmr lmao
Haha should I do some??
JOJI type beat
thanks!
oooooo a whole video series to follow up a random convo we had? fuck yeahhhh
I’ve been recommending Bitwig to so many people lately and then I realized there wasn’t much content for beginners on it 😂
this is literally built into mac if you just right click > rename
oh i did not know that. Didn't use to be when I started using this application lol thanks for that!
tbh I think namechanger is still probably easier for most people. It's a better inferface.
@@jrileyhill ya u rite
Thanks man this is really useful
You’re welcome!
👍
wow! thanks Riley!
haha thanks Tim :) makin some beats???
Unfortunately the person who created this has passed away and it's no longer being updated 😢 For a free alternative I'd recommend StudioRack by Waves, it's VST3 only but it's very slick and works as well as the paid options.
Riley you gonna be my recording Guru!! thank yoU!
haha you using Bitwig??
I get the following error, could someone help: ...UGENE27771-ReaScripts\Various\FXRack/Modules\FXChain.lua:254: attempt to index a nil value (local 'fx_chain')

pretty neat
thanks! yeah it's still a great free fx bundle
Thank you so much man 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 love it. Gonna learn how to create 808s as well based on this tutorial. Blessings and best wishes all the way from Berlin, Germany.
you are most welcome. gonna be making some more videos soon
Hello! thanks a lot for your tutorial, really enjoyed it.
thanks! glad you liked it
aww man... very tempting, but not sure how steep the learning curve is. I've always dreamt about a vst version of ffmpeg's compander.
I've never written a full js plugin, just tweaked them, and there isn't much in terms of tutorials around, however, more and more js plugins exist now adays so it's easy to take a look at the code of ones that do similar things to what you want and just start tweaking. I say go for it!
Ever wanted to combine presets? Now you can. Open a preset, say a sequence preset, and right click on the letter A (scene) and select copy. Then open another preset, say a pad preset, and right click on B (scene) and select paste. Set each scene to dual and presto - you now have a pad with a lively sequence.
great tip!
How load VSTi midi instruments?
Thanks for the upcomming serie, I think it's a great idea to make a js/rea plugin serie, and I will follow you ;) Ups, I just saw it was a 2 years old video I watched! (So upcomming was to late)
haha yeah it's been a while, unfortunately i don't know enough to do a full series, I just wanted to show people a bit about what is the difference between js and other formats. check out @leafac if you are already, he does lots of reaper plugins and JS type content
Best video i've seen about this equalizer. Looks like a fantastic alternative to fabfilter
cheers
JD code is not compiled. It's interpreted in realtime. Huge difference. If you make tutorials you should at least know some basics.
I don't know what JD code is, but I don't talk about it in the video. If you are gonna comment on other people's videos you should at least watch them lol
If this is what you mean..... here is text literally from the first paragraph of JSFX manual on the reaper site: "JSFX are written in EEL2, a scripting language that is compiled on the fly and allows you to modify and/or generate audio and MIDI, as well as draw custom vector based UI and analysis displays." "compiled on the fly"... hmmm if that is the language the REAPER dev's use I'm pretty sure it's ok for us as well.
@@jrileyhill haha don't mind him bro. your video was informative
'Interpreted' in realtime is the same thing as saying 'compiled' in real time which is exactly what he says in the video at 1:50. Sounds like you need to hit the books yourself my dude.
It's it's actual JS like in the browser, it is actually compiled if it's based on V8 partially even assembly machine code.
worst sounds and music i have heard in my life
Thanks my dude
Thank You
you're welcome! glad it was helpful
Thanks! I've been meaning to play with JS and coding for a while...
awesome, glad it was helpful
I downloaded and installed Surge Synth VST into my FL Studio, but when I try playing sounds on the keyboard in FL studio no sounds appear. How do I fix this?
Wdym? I use the trial version yet it works perfectly for me
Thank you, for the great overview - what wonderful architecture/options!
good tuto man!!thanks!
glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the kind words
thanks for the lesson .gave me a good overview
awesome, glad it was helpful
É maravilhoso; grato!
You can also load your own WT or prepared WAV files made for Serum or other wavetable synths. I suggest to download an additional content from the website and use for example NI Massive WTs ;)
crashed my Cubase, have to reinstall, virus,
Surge is an open source project, it's highly unlikely for it to be a virus as it's a community project and all the source code is available to view and read for anyone. surge-synthesizer.github.io/viruses It does have bugs though, if you have time consider writing a bug report for the github so whatever caused your crash can be fixed in the future.
UHM no I don't think so
Is very interessing your video, but the download file in surge-synthesizer.github.io/ is infected by Malware, found by AVG antivirus.
this version is ok: www.vstplanet.com/Instruments/VST_Synthesizers45.htm
Yeah you can read about that here: surge-synthesizer.github.io/viruses It's a false positive, I'd suggest downloading the newer version it has a lot of great new features over the older one.
very helpful video
thanks a lot!
How did you get that toolbar above in reaper
Oh hey, it's a custom toolbar that I made with buttons for things I use often. In REAPER. Go into "view" and find the "toolbar docker", once it's visible right click on the empty space inside the toolbar and select "Position toolbar -> At top of main windows" now you have a toolbar at the top you can edit. Here is a good video from REAPER Blog that goes into more details if you want: ua-cam.com/video/gtYp_5AgSWc/v-deo.html
@@jrileyhill thanks, now I made my own, it was tedious to me the fact of opening the mixer via keyboard
@@thlst-ly5jt nice! yea it's really worth spending the time to customize Reaper to how you use personally use it. Such an advantage of the software.
MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am going too! Have a plan for one in mind and have started working on youtube content again
This is so cool and it made me discover FXRack. However, the "J Riley Hill folder" that has to be copied to the effects in my Reaper path only contains Text documents and it doesn't load as FX. What did I do wrong?
Oh, I found them when I realized you had made presets with them loaded for us. Thank you so much, this is great!
glad you found it useful.
Well... I figured it was a good idea to check out a video and see if I missed anything, apparently this thing has wavetables. Definitely my favorite synth for when I want xenharmonic stuff. Ohh, now those comparisons to Serum make a lot more sense to me btw.
And it's only gotten more and more features since I made this video! Glad it was helpful
Thanks alot
glad it was helpful!
hahaha I love your swing icon
thanks haha I can't remember where I found that. If you want it I uploaded it to the stash on it's own. stash.reaper.fm/37706/swing.png
